How to brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush

how to brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush

The toothbrush is an essential tool for oral hygiene care. In order to remove dental plaque produced by oral microorganisms, it is possible to use both an electric toothbrush and a manual toothbrush to achieve the desired results.

From an early age we are taught to use a manual toothbrush correctly. But how should we brush our teeth with an electric toothbrush? In each case it is necessary to apply an appropriate technique, and on this occasion we will focus specifically on the use of an electric toothbrush.

What is an electric toothbrush?

It is a type of toothbrush that performs automatic movements to achieve a better cleaning of the teeth. Depending on the type of device or brush head, the movements can be oscillating or rotating, reaching a high speed to remove plaque and food debris effectively.

Today, it is estimated that around half of the population uses an electric toothbrush to ensure good daily dental hygiene. Thanks to new designs that are more effective and easier to use, children and adults of all ages find the electric toothbrush the perfect tool for better cleaning with less effort.

Benefits of electric toothbrushes

Brushing with an electric toothbrush is highly effective in removing plaque.

The new devices come equipped with state-of-the-art systems, which ensure thorough brushing beyond what we can do with manual brushes.

The KIN Electric toothbrush has an oscillating brush head that helps to effectively control plaque formation. In addition, the shape of the brush heads and their length allow you to reach hard-to-reach areas.

Another advantage that electric toothbrushes offer is that they include a timer, to ensure that we comply with the brushing time. A total of 2 minutes is the time we should brush our teeth, going through the different areas of the mouth, to ensure that we do not leave a single piece of dental plaque behind.

Like the manual toothbrush, the electric toothbrush should be used after every meal to prevent tooth decay, tartar and gum problems.

Are you sure you are using your electric toothbrush correctly? Follow these steps to learn how to brush your teeth with this practical oral hygiene accessory:

Divide the mouth

Start by dividing the mouth into 4 parts. These parts are: the upper left and right quadrant, and the lower left and right quadrant.

Brushing should last at least 2 minutes. In this way, to spread it out better, you can dedicate 30 seconds to each area, making sure you don't leave any part of your mouth without deep cleaning.

Cleaning of the inner side

Start by cleaning the first quadrant. Position the toothbrush with the brush head tilted 45° towards the gum, so that it covers the inner side of the tooth, without touching the gum directly.

Start the toothbrush. Start by cleaning the molars from the back to the front, spending a few seconds on each tooth so that the toothbrush can do its job.

Cleaning of the external face

When you have finished with the inner side of the molars and teeth, it is time to cover the outer side of the same quadrant. Repeat the procedure, placing the head at a 45 degree angle towards the gum, and focusing on each tooth separately.

Be careful not to press the toothbrush too hard against the gums. It is enough to apply light pressure to avoid damaging them. It is also not necessary to use a back-and-forth motion as with a manual toothbrush. Thanks to the rotating or oscillating movements of the toothbrush, we achieve the same effect, multiplied by 10 times.

Cleaning of the biting surface

Once you have finished the inside and outside of the first quadrant, it is time to clean the grinding area. Move on to the top of the molars and teeth, this time pressing a little harder on them, as there is no risk of damaging the gums here.

Let the brush head "embrace" each tooth separately, so that the bristles can pull all the dirt away.

In 30 seconds you will have finished the first quadrant. Then it's time to continue with the rest of the quadrants into which we divided the mouth, dedicating another 30 seconds to each of them.

Complement toothbrushing with other accessories

In the same way as with a manual toothbrush, when you have finished using the electric toothbrush, it is time to rinse off any residue. Press the off button and you can remove the toothbrush from your mouth.

Rinse the brush head properly and spit out any remaining toothpaste into the sink. You can rinse your mouth with a little water, making sure that no food remains in the oral cavity.

Just as important as using a toothbrush and toothpaste is to supplement hygiene with interdental brushes or dental floss. These accessories reach the surfaces between the teeth that the bristles of the toothbrush cannot reach, where food debris and plaque often accumulate.

When to change the electric toothbrush head?

Over time, electric toothbrush heads wear out and become less effective during cleaning. For this reason, hygiene and dental care experts recommend changing the brush head at least every 3 to 4 months.

This change should be made prematurely when you notice that the filaments of the head start to open before 3 months of age. In people who use braces or any other orthodontic treatment, the heads tend to deteriorate more quickly.

If you can't remember the last time you changed your electric toothbrush head, you can use the colour indicator on the bristles as a guide. The refills for the KIN Electric Toothbrush have blue filaments, which when they start to discolour indicate that they need to be replaced with a new brush head.
